Karilyn Parker - Blog 3 - Routman Chapter 3

I love the lists of why I read, what I read and what I'm reading next on pages 24 & 25. Students need to see, hear, and understand the importance and benefits of reading. And then expounding upon that benefits and letting the students understand that the real reason was because you liked it! What a thought! Enjoying reading and being able to share it with others!
I think encouraging students to have favorite authors is a great idea, but also looking for new authors that could join their lists of favorites. Students need time to share their favorite authors, because their favorite author might also become their classmates favorite author as well.

Ideas for using this in the classroom could be...
1) having student's list of favorite authors posted on the wall where they can add to the list as the year goes on and other students can see other authors as well
2) Book Reviews on Padlet - Something posted where students can add what they are reading and why they love it.
3) Posting a Book Review on Amazon or Barnes & Noble about a good book that they are reading.

  1. I love your take-aways from this chapter! Any authentic ways we can get students to discuss their reading will only improve their ability to read and comprehend. It will also foster relationships among with one other and with the teacher. Will you be trying any of your take-aways? I would love to hear how it goes and if you have found more benefits for giving these ideas a try!

  2. Hi Parker,
I loved the ideas Routman shared in Chapter 3 of sharing our reading lives and our experiences through book talks and book reviews too. I loved the list of take aways that you shared that you want to try out with your fifth graders. Thank you! Sincerely, Dawn
